A memorial and walk in recognition of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is planned for Thursday, Dec. 6 at York’s Keele campus.
The wheelchair accessible walk will begin in Vari Hall at 11:15am and end at the Sacred Fire spot near Stong Pond on York’s Keele campus, followed by a memorial until 12:30pm. The events were organized by various groups on campus, 
including the York Federation of Students, Centre for Women & Trans People, Sexual Assault Survivors Support Line & Leadership, Graduate Students Association, TBLGAY, Aboriginal Students Association at York, Diversity Peer Education Team, Residence Life and the Centre for Human Rights.
The goal of the event is to highlight ongoing subtle and explicit violence that disproportionately targets women, since it can have many definitions and mean different things to different people.
An anti-violence quilt-making session will also take place, from 2 to 4pm, at 322 Student Centre with Remembering Otherwise that evening in the open space in front of the same room. Everyone is welcome. Remembering Otherwise – a drama short, dub poetry and candlelit conversation – will take place from 6:30 to 8:30pm.
The Day of Remembrance was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada to mark the anniversary of the murders of 14 women in 1989 at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women, in an act of gender-based violence.
