Maria Arista was an academic advisor with a beautiful spirit, patience and warmth that was immediately felt by her students and colleagues in York’s Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. Her specialty was newly admitted students, for whom she had a particular affinity and understanding. Maria’s relaxed style made them feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Sadly, Maria passed away on Monday, Dec. 10, and she will be truly missed.
Maria Arista
Maria is fondly remembered by her advising colleagues as someone who was instinctively maternal and always creating an atmosphere of family and harmony in the workplace. Her gentle hugs and kind words of encouragement were welcome relief during busy and stressful days. Those in the Centre for Student Success say they were privileged to have known Maria and will always remember her with affection and respect.
Originally from Venezuela, Maria came to Canada to add English to her repertoire of languages, which also included Italian and Spanish. Here, she met her husband Peter and raised a family. An employee of York University for nearly 25 years, Maria held a variety of positions – all in the direct service and support of students – in the former Atkinson Faculty and in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.
A funeral mass will be held this Friday, Dec. 14 at 10am at St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Church, 1675 Finch Ave. W. Visit here for more information or to leave a message of condolence.
