York University’s top academic student-athletes were honoured on Tuesday afternoon at the annual academic all-Canadian luncheon.
The student-athletes, representing 19 Lions teams, were recognized for their achievements in the classroom during the 2011-12 academic year. Academic all-Canadian awards are given to Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) student-athletes who achieve a sessional grade point average (GPA) of 7.5 and higher, while Ontario University Athletics (OUA) achievement awards are for student-athletes on OUA teams who have earned the same GPA.
Also honoured at the luncheon were the student-athletes who have earned athletic financial awards (AFAs). Entering AFAs are awarded to those who have achieved an 80 per cent entering average and are elite student-athletes. These awards are given to only 25 new student-athletes each year and are renewable up to five years. To continue to receive the award student-athletes must achieve a 6.0 GPA (equivalent to a B or 70 per cent).
Also in attendance at the breakfast was Janet Morrison, vice-provost, students, who praised the student-athletes for their remarkable ability to balance a high level of athletics with strong academic achievement.
