University of Athens psychology Professor Elias Besevegis, an Onassis Foundation visiting scholar, will discuss immigrants in Greece at the next LaMarsh Centre for Child & Youth Research talk.
“Immigrants in Greece: Acculturation Strategies, Adaptation, and Adolescents’ Identity Development” will take place Monday, March 21, from 11am to 12:30pm, at 280A York Lanes, Keele campus. Everyone is welcome to attend. A light lunch will be served. To RSVP, contact lamarsh@yorku.ca.
The lecture consists of two parts. The first part will deal with adult immigrants’ acculturation strategies and how these strategies relate to immigrants’ psychological adaptation in Greece.
The second part will focus on immigrant adolescents’ identity, both psychological and ethnic, the processes involved and their relation with adolescents’ psychological problems, well-being and self-esteem.
Results of the two respective studies will be discussed in terms of what seems to be the best practice for immigrants’ integration to the host society, on the one hand, and for their mental health, on the other.
