York Professor Joyce Zemans will receive an honorary doctorate from Concordia University during its Spring Convocation ceremonies in June.
She is being honoured “for her invaluable work in art history and cultural policy in Canada and internationally”, according to Concordia.

The director of the MBA Program in Arts and Media Administration at York’s Schulich School of Business at, Zemans is a senior scholar and art historian. She is the former director of the Canada Council for the Arts (1988-1992); dean of York’s Faculty of Fine Arts (1985-88); and Chair of York’s Department of Visual Art (1975-82).
She is a member of the advisory boards of the Toronto Arts Council, Theatre Museum Canada, and Concordia University’s Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art. In 2002, she was appointed a member of the Order of Canada.
She is co-editor of Strategies of Engagement: Museums after Modernism (Blackwells, 2007) and Making Change: A History of the Laidlaw Foundation (ECW Press, 2001). Her art historical and gallery work include the exhibition and catalogue, Les Revenants: Long Shadows: The Art of Tony Urquhart (University of Waterloo, 2002), “Considering the Canon” in Lasting Impressions (Art Gallery of Hamilton, 2005).
