Following on a host of successful workshops in May, Fine Arts Summer Intensive (FASI), the dynamic community outreach and continuing education initiative of York University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, is gearing up to launch a new crop of programs in July. From life drawing and cello performance to creative coding and street dance, there’s literally something for everyone in FASI.
FASI is an ideal setting for high school students to get a taste of university life, for educators and emerging and established professionals to enhance their skills, and for arts enthusiasts of all ages to explore a new interest. Workshops are taught by faculty members and industry professionals in the Faculty of Fine Arts’ state-of-the-art studios at York’s Keele campus.

Love to laugh? Check out the five-day Character Improv boot camp led by indie comedian and Second City company member Hayley Kellett. Designed for young artists and pre-professionals, it focuses on developing the skills to create and maintain big, bold characters in improvised scenes. A variety of short improv games (like those played on Whose Line is it Anyway?) and Kellett’s guidance and feedback will help you learn how to crack up an audience.
Want to get your move on? Bollywood Dance & Choreography boot camp, led by April Nakaima, offers an introduction to Bollywood dance routines – a lively mixture of jazz, funk, street/hip-hop, contemporary and classical Indian dance. No prior experience required!
If you’re a budding woodwind player, you can hone your chops in a friendly, non-competitive environment in FASI’s Clarinet Boot Camp or Flute Boot Camp. Led by York faculty members Patricia Wait-Waisenblum and Barbara Ackerman, respectively, these week-long performance intensives feature daily master classes with training in technique and musicianship, and culminate in a mini-concert for friends and family.
Acting for the Stage boot camp, recommended for high school students who are considering pursuing theatre training at the post-secondary level, includes work in movement, voice, devised theatre and scene study. It’s taught by actor, dancer, movement coach, choreographer and York theatre alumna Tosha Doiron.
Intensives in film and physical theatre offer professionals and pre-professionals the opportunity to expand their artistic practice.
July film intensives include screenwriting and art direction, which aim to impart both hands-on experience and an understanding of how the business works. Screenwriters Stephen Davis and Caitlyn Fryers will take you through the structure of a script, where to find ideas, and how to turn a story idea into a short script. Art director and production designer Radha Menon covers everything from colour palettes and script breakdowns to physical scenery and set dressing.
The techniques of renowned Japanese theatre directors Tadashi Suzuki and Shogo Ohta are the focus of Physical Approaches to Performance, a five-day intensive presented in association with Signal Theatre. Guided by seasoned director, actor and educator Steven Pearson, participants will use a combination of form-based and improvisational structures to address elements of physical power, clarity, precision, delicacy and ease. Practical skills training will focus on the merging of mind and body in the moment-to-moment experience of the actor.
Aspiring filmmakers in FASI’s Film Producing Workshop in May
If you’re a teacher struggling to make Shakespeare accessible to your students, Shakespeare Without Fear in the Classroom! is for you. This three-day intensive is led by York theatre alumnus and faculty member Michael Kelly, artistic director of Shakespeare in Action. It offers strategies to make the encounter with the Bard’s works more engaging and emotionally fulfilling for youth, including techniques to demystify the language and active strategies for scene development and text analysis.
The two-week Dance and the Child intensive for educators, led by York dance Professor Mary Elizabeth Manley, offers tools, strategies, practical resources and applications for teaching dance to elementary school students from kindergarten to grade eight.
An intriguing FASI experience open to all audiences is the two-day Sound Art Intensive, led by musician and interdisciplinary artist, Professor Marc Couroux. Through listening experiments, field recordings and creative (de)construction, you’ll engage in an exploration of sound, how it works with time and space, and how it can inform and condition daily life, from modulating mood to constructing social bonds and, yes – hatching the dreaded earworm.
And for a digital media adventure that combines sound and visuals, immerse yourself in The VJ Experience. This hands-on weekend intensive, led by VJ and live visuals artist Jackie “Jax A Muse” Levitt, teaches the skills and tools VJs employ for live manipulation of audio and video. Using a variety of hardware and software, you’ll create your own short, live media performance.

Students learned about dramatic stage lighting FASI’s May Introduction to Advanced Lighting Technology for Student Designers
“Our May sessions were exhilarating,” said FASI coordinator and Fine Arts graduate Albert Tam (BFA ’11). “Seeing the participants making connections with the instructors and each other, and the many exciting creative collaborations happening in the workshops – the FASI community was electric! We look forward to continuing that momentum in July.”
There are still some spaces available in selected FASI workshops. For detailed information on programs, instructor bios and how to register, visit the FASI website.
