Mark-Anthony Kaye‘s stellar two-goal performance helped the York University Lions men’s soccer team end its regular season on a high note Sunday, defeating the University of Waterloo Warriors at York Stadium by a score of 4-1. The victory clinched first place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division for the seventh straight year with 40 points and a 13-2-1 record. The Lions had already secured a first-round bye in the playoffs and will host the lowest remaining seed in the quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.
Kaye’s two goals give him a total of 11 on the season, tying him with teammate Jonathan Lao for the team lead and second overall in the OUA. The two players chased each other all year for the scoring title, providing a large majority of the Lions’ offence. More details on the York Lions website.
One day earlier, the Lions nearly let a three-goal lead slip away but held on to defeat the University of Windsor Lancers by a score of 3-2.
The game was defined by aggressive play and penalties as the two teams clashed from the first touch. The Lions would jump off to a quick start despite the wet conditions. Tyrone Downes broke through the defence for a solo rush just seconds in but a hard sliding tackle from goaltender Kyle Vizirakis thwarted his attack. More details.
Football Lions close season with loss to No. 1 Mustangs
The York University Lions football team was defeated 50-10 by the No. 1 nationally ranked Western University Mustangs in its season finale on Saturday afternoon at TD Stadium in London, Ont. With the win, the Mustangs finish first in the OUA standings and secure their first undefeated season since 1998. The loss drops the Lions to 2-6 on the year.
Connor Pritty during Saturday’s game with the Western University Mustangs
The Mustangs reached the 50-point plateau for the seventh time in eight games this season, as the Lions came within one late fourth-quarter touchdown of holding the high-octane Western offence to its lowest output of the season. The home squad also tied or broke eight different Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) or OUA records on the day, including a new conference mark of 458 points on the season.
The Lions defence forced Western sophomore quarterback Will Finch into three interceptions on the day, the most since his first career start against the Guelph Gryphons last October. Two of those picks were courtesy of first-year safety Connor Pritty, while the third was thanks to second-year defensive back Josh Small. More details.
Ghoneim scores twice to lead women’s soccer Lions over Warriors
Nour Ghoneim scored two goals to lift the York University Lions women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory Sunday over the University of Waterloo Warriors in the final game of the regular season at York Stadium. Ghoneim finished with eight goals in just nine games to lead all Lions and rank fifth in the OUA despite playing less games than any other player in the top 30. She also came into the game late in place of goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini and made one save to preserve the shutout.
The win would be bittersweet for the Lions because they were eliminated from the playoffs after Saturday’s loss to the University of Windsor Lancers. The Lions finish the season with a record of 4-5-7 and in seventh place in the OUA West. More details.
