Jennifer McGuire, general manager and editor-in-chief of CBC News on radio, television, digital and mobile platforms, will discuss ethics in journalism, followed by a Q&A, at a live streaming event Wednesday open to everyone.
The discussion, part of the Journalism Ethics: A Practical and Theoretical Approach course 
taught by Professor Andrea McKenzie of the Writing Department, will take place Nov. 13 at 2:30pm.

With the scandal surrounding Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, as well as the expulsion of three senators from the Senate, the event couldn’t be timelier, says McKenzie. “I’m a strong believer in experiential education. It’s important to learn how journalists do their jobs, to see how they actually perform them, and to understand the decisions they have to make, often on a daily basis.”
The general public may not understand that good journalists, trained in their field, abide by a code of conduct and standards of ethics, says McKenzie, former director of Writing in the Disciplines at New York University.
Students in the course are required to research the speakers’ backgrounds ahead of time, read current stories, and prepare questions.
McGuire will be at York to interact with the students in McKenzie’s course, but her discussion will be live streamed for everyone.
McGuire is the chief journalist for CBC News and the manager of all news and regional programing, including its all-news channel on CBC News Network and cbcnews.ca, The National, the fifth estate, World Report, as well as local information programing, such as “Metro Morning”, across the country. She is also responsible for the first all-digital hyperlocal station in Hamilton, Ont.
Previous speakers have included Joshua Norman, CBSNews.com senior editor and Pulitzer Prize winner for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and Martin Gottlieb, former global editions editor of The New York Times and current editor of The Record and Herald News of North Jersey.
