Join Catherine Coumans, research co-ordinator of Mining Watch Canada and Anthony Bebbington, Higgins Professor of Environment and Society at Clark University, for a panel discussion about contesting governance in extractives-led development.
The discussion will take place Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 3:30pm at 519 Kaneff Tower, Keele campus, followed by a reception. Everyone is welcome to attend. The event is presented by the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean.
Catherine Coumans
Coumans has worked with non-governmental organizations and mining affected communities in India, Burma, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Kanaky-New Caledonia. Her work has focused on indigenous peoples affected by Canadian mining companies. She has provided expert testimony on mining in two congressional inquiries in the Philippines in 1999 and again in 2001. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed reports and articles on mining, and she co-authored Framework for Responsible Mining: A Guide to Evolving Standards (2005).
Anthony Bebbington
Bebbington’s work addresses the political ecology of rural change with a particular focus on extractive industries and socio-environmental conflicts, social movements, indigenous organizations and livelihoods. He has worked throughout South and Central America, primarily in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, and more recently in El Salvador.
The event is supported by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada and co-sponsored by Social Science, Law & Society, the Faculty of Environmental Studies, and the departments of anthropology and geography, as well as African studies and Latin American and Caribbean studies.
