Experiential education strategy development: Invitation to open forum at York

In the summer of 2013, the Experiential Education Working Group was established to provide advice on the integration of experiential education approaches to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, the overall academic experience of York’s students and the building of relationships between York and the community.

The Experiential Education Working Group is currently seeking input from the York University community to discuss how to better enhance student learning thorough experiential education.

An open forum on the topic has been set for Nov. 25, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm at 519 Kaneff Tower, Keele campus. Join the discussion on how to better enhance and deepen student learning through experiential education. RSVP by filling out the Experiential Education Forum form. If you are unable to join us for the open forum, you can provide feedback online through the Experiential Education Consultation Feedback form.

The Experiential Education Discussion Paper, a work in progress, will serve as a tool for consultation with faculty, staff, students and community partners to encourage informed discussion about the use of experiential education strategies. Final recommendations will be presented to the provost in December.

The first task that the group was mandated to undertake was the development of high-level strategy to assist the University leadership in making decisions about embedding experiential approaches in degree programs.

The current work of the Experiential Education Work Group will take into consideration the recommendations that were made previously as part of the White Paper process. In 2010, a working group had been established by the vice-president academic and provost with the goal of developing an experiential education business case to guide the implementation of directives from the white paper. A document, titled “Experiential Education Business Case for York University” (June 2010), was produced. This business case has provided valuable direction for the current deliberations.
