The York University Lions women’s basketball team continues to roll, picking up its fourth straight win with a 55-52 victory over the Laurentian University Voyageurs at Ben Avery Gymnasium in Sudbury, Ont., on Saturday night.
The Lions built a 17-8 lead in the first quarter after a very strong opening 10 minutes of play and carried that advantage through to the end. It was the only quarter in which the Lions outscored the Voyageurs in the contest. More details on the York Lions website.
One night earlier, the Lions downed the Algoma University Thunderbirds 67-43 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. It was an all-around team effort for the Lions, with four different players reaching double digits in scoring and producing the team’s highest offensive output of the year. Women’s volleyball Lions defeat Badgers for 11th win
The York University Lions women’s volleyball team earned an impressive win in four sets Saturday, defeating the Brock University Badgers while on the road in St. Catharines, Ont., for its 11th win of the season.
The Lions were in control throughout the first two sets, winning 25-15 and 25-19. Brock would snag the third 25-19, but York would eventually claim the final frame, 25-23, for the 3-1 decision. More details.
Dakic’s 20 points lead men’s volleyball Lions over Gryphons
Marko Dakic put together a tremendous performance with 20 points on Saturday night to lead the York University Lions men’s volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over the University of Guelph Gryphons on the road.
Dakic finished with 17 kills and three service aces, and also added five digs in the win.
The Lions raced out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-18. But the two squads battled throughout the second set and the Gryphons pulled ahead when it mattered most, taking it 26-24 to split the match 1-1. The rest of the contest played out similarly, with the two teams evenly matched throughout, but the Lions were able to grab the final two sets by the same 25-23 score to pick up their 10th win of the season. The previous night, the Lions played their third straight five-set match, falling to the No. 10 nationally-ranked University of Waterloo Warriors on the road. The two teams would split the opening frames, 25-17 for Waterloo, and 25-21 for York, with the Warriors also claiming the third, 25-21. But York would snatch the fourth, 25-22 to force a fifth set. Waterloo ultimately won the deciding set 15-9 to pick up an important win in the OUA standings. More details.
Tulloch scores 24 to lead men’s basketball Lions over Thunderbirds
Daniel Tulloch’s stellar 24-point game catapulted the York University Lions men’s basketball team to an 84-77 victory over the Algoma University Thunderbirds at the George Leach Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Friday.
The Mississauga, Ont., native went 6-of-8 from the floor and 10-of-15 from the free throw line on the night, and also added six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal for his most productive game of the season. More details.
Tulloch was also impressive the following night with 28 points against the Laurentian University Voyageurs, but Alex Ratte nailed the game-winning three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to lift his team to an 86-85 win in Sudbury, Ont.
The last-second basket capped a back-and-forth game the Voyageurs had led by eight points at the half and by three after three quarters. But the Lions came all the way back and held a two-point lead late when Laurentian called a timeout to draw up the final play. Ratte attempted a three that missed, but it was rebounded by a teammate and kicked back out to him again, and he made no mistake on his second try. More details.
Men’s hockey Lions edge Gryphons in Frosty Mug game
A two-point night from defenceman John de Gray helped lift the York University Lions men’s hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Guelph Gryphons in Guelph’s annual Frosty Mug game at the Sleeman Centre on Friday.
The win moves the Lions to 10-9-1 on the season and gives them an important two points in the OUA West Division standings, moving them back into seventh place and just one point behind the Gryphons, with one game in hand. More details.
The victory came one night after a late third-period comeback by the visiting Brock University Badgers handed the Lions a 3-2 defeat on home ice. The Badgers scored all three of their goals in a seven-minute span in the third period to erase what was a 2-0 lead for the Lions early in the period. More details.
Langford scores two in women’s hockey loss to Lancers
Kiri Langford netted two goals but the University of Windsor Lancers came back to defeat the York University Lions women’s hockey team by a score of 4-3 at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday evening.
The Lions led 3-2 early in the third period after Langford’s second goal of the game, but Erinn Noseworthy netted a pair of her own in the final 5:35 of the contest, including the winner with 3:02 left, to give the Lancers their fourth win in a row. More details.
One night earlier, the Lions dropped a tough 6-1 loss to the visiting Western University Mustangs on home ice. The Lions got off to the quicker start, testing Western’s composure early. The Mustangs would falter under the surge and sacrificed a man advantage to York on a costly penalty. On the power play, Lindsay Brook rifled a shot from the point that was earmarked for a goal, but Western goaltender Olivia Ross was there to shut the door and kill the penalty. More details.
Brathwaite, Jansen highlight strong weekend at Fred Foot Memorial meet
Eric Brathwaite and Richard Jansen won two gold medals each at the Fred Foot Memorial meet this past weekend at the University of Toronto, leading a York University Lions track and field contingent that won a total of 14 medals at the meet.
Brathwaite finished in first place in both the shot put and the weight throw, surpassing the CIS standard in both events. His distance of 18.50m in the weight throw was nearly two metres better than the rest of the field and led a sweep of the event by the Lions. Chris Preece won the silver medal with a throw of 16.86m, and Anojan Sivalingam was third at 13.05m.
In the shot put, Brathwaite’s throw of 16.69m was a season best and just eclipsed the 16.47m-distance from teammate Umar Khan, who won the silver medal in the event.
Jansen won gold medals in the long jump and triple jump and surpassed the OUA standard in both events. He posted a season-best distance of 6.74m in the long jump, 71 centimetres better than the second-place finisher, and won the triple jump with a distance of 13.62m. More details.
