Two law professors receive Osgoode Research Fellowships

Osgoode Research Fellows

Osgoode Hall Law School Professors Janet Walker and Philip Girard.

Osgoode Research Fellowships, which recognize and encourage outstanding research at Osgoode Hall Law School, have been awarded to Professors Philip Girard and Janet Walker for 2014-2015.  The Fellowships will allow the two scholars to work on their research projects free of teaching responsibilities.

Girard's research project, "A History of Law in Canada, 1500-2000", will result in a a one-volume study of the history of law in Canada. The study will be the first of its kind and will encompass the time of European contact to the end of the 20th century.

The main objective of Walker's research will be to prepare a seventh edition of Castel and Walker: Canadian Conflict of Laws. The book offers an expansive and practical view of private international law, including common law, conventions, legislation and treaties that govern this growing area of law. The main text on this area of law, it is among the works most cited by Canadian courts. The new edition is needed to reflect fundamental changes in the law.
