Weekend wrap: Men's basketball Lions hold off Voyageurs for ninth win

The York University Lions men's basketball team built a big lead and then held on down the stretch to defeat the visiting Laurentian University Voyageurs by a score of 96-86 at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday night.

The Lions were firing on all cylinders to start the game and built a huge 32-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. They continued to build on that lead in the second and mid-way through the quarter led 41-19 thanks to a monster put-back jam by Nick Tufegdzich.

The Lions outscored the Voyageurs by five in the frame and held a commanding 53-28 advantage at the half.  More details on the York Lions website.

The next night, Aaron Rados scored 15 points in his 83-59 grad night victory over the visiting Algoma University Thunderbirds. For the Lions, Tufegdzich and Daniel Tulloch were impressive, with Tufegdzich finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots; while Tulloch ended with 19 points, three rebounds and an assist.  More details.

Women’s basketball Lions down Voyageurs, strengthen grip on fifth

The York University Lions women's basketball team posted a 67-54 victory over the Laurentian University Voyageurs on home court at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday evening to move two points ahead of the Ryerson University Rams for fifth place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East standings.

After a tightly-contested first quarter in which the Lions outscored the Voyageurs by just three – 17-14 – the home squad exploded for 23 points in the second to take a commanding 40-29 lead at the half.  More details.

The following night, the Lions made quick work of the Algoma University Thunderbirds, winning 60-36. Kayla Pangos and Llyandra Kerr were the stand-outs for a stingy Lions offensive attack, with Pangos draining 15 points, along with four rebounds and three assists. Kerr followed closely behind with 14 points, as well as four rebounds, a steal and one blocked shot.  More details.

Lombardi nets winner to cap comeback win over Rams

Four third-period goals, including two from forward Mike Lombardi just 26 seconds apart, catapulted the York University Lions men's hockey team to a 7-5 victory over the Ryerson University Rams on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Arena.

Lombardi's two scores, including the tying goal at 14:14 of the third period and then the go-ahead marker at 14:40, capped a four-point night for the fourth-year winger as he also earned a pair of assists in the contest. In the high-scoring affair, he wasn't even the top point-getter for the Lions on the day, as teammate Michael Santini scored a hat trick, his second in the last three games, and added two assists for a game-high five points.  More details.

On Thursday night, the Lions lost a heart breaker to the visiting Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, falling by a score of 2-1 in overtime on home ice.

After the two squads played to a 2-2 draw through the first 60 minutes, Laurier's Greg Lamoureux ended the game just 29 seconds into overtime when he sniped a quick goal past goaltender Andrew Perugini to give the Golden Hawks the extra point.  More details.

Track and field Lions post 13 podium finishes at York Open

The York University Lions track and field team recorded 13 podium finishes, including four gold medals, at their annual York Open meet at the Toronto Track and Field Centre on Saturday.

Thrower Brittany Crew had another tremendous day, winning the gold medal in the shot put and the silver medal in the weight throw. Her distance of 15.51m in the shot put set a new meet record and further increased the school record she set one week ago. She also threw a personal-best distance of 16.96m in the weight throw, which qualified her for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships in the event.

The other three gold medals were won by the men's team. Jumper Richard Jansen had a strong afternoon with a personal-best jump of 7.15m, which surpassed the CIS standard in the event. He also qualified for the CIS championships in the triple jump one week earlier.  More details.

Women’s volleyball Lions bounce back with sweep of Lancers

The York University Lions women's volleyball team rebounded from its fourth loss of the season to defeat the University of Windsor Lancers in straight sets on the road on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions made quick work of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West's third-place team, winning 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 to improve to 13-4 on the year. The record has them in third place in the tight OUA East standings, two points back of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.  More details.

One day earlier, the Lions were defeated in a tough fight, ultimately falling 3-2 to the host Western University Mustangs. Western claimed a tight first set, 27-25, but York fought back in the next two, 25-22 and 25-21. The Mustangs would snag the fourth however, 25-14, and the deciding fifth set, 15-12, for the victory.  More details.

Thomas finishes second at Western Open

York University Lions wrestler Omar Thomas won the silver medal in the 90kg division at the Western Open in London, Ont., on Saturday.

The result marks the second time this season he has won a silver medal and the fourth time he has found the podium overall. Thomas also finished second at the Brock Open and won bronze medals at McMaster and the York Open.

Thomas defeated Mike Casagrande from the Algoma University Thunderbirds 12-2 in his first match and followed that up with a 7-2 win over Kyle Bock-Dann from the host Western University Mustangs in the semifinals.  More details.

Lancers come back to take down men’s volleyball Lions

In a seesaw battle at the St. Denis Centre on Sunday afternoon, it was the University of Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team who came out victorious, keeping their playoff hopes alive and well with a five-set triumph over the visiting York University Lions.

After falling in the first set 25-22, the Lions came back to take the second set by the same score and then dominated the start of the third, opening up a 10-0 lead before Windsor picked up its first points of the set. The Lions carried that momentum through to the end, wining 25-8 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.  More details.

Earlier in the weekend, the Lions were swept by the nationally-ranked Western University Mustangs in London, Ont. The Mustangs make quick work of the Lions, winning 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18 for the victory.  More details.

Morillo’s three points lead Ridgebacks over women’s hockey Lions

Jill Morillo posted three points to lead the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks to a 3-1 victory over the host York University Lions on Saturday afternoon at Canlan Ice Sports.

Morillo netted the final two goals of the game, including the winner at the 13:31 mark of the third period, to give UOIT its fourth straight win.

The first period was largely a defensive affair as the two squads combined for just 14 shot on goal – seven apiece – in the frame. The Ridgebacks got on the board first late in the period when Sarah Worthington scored at 16:46 for a 1-0 goal advantage.  More details.
