York’s president issues an update to the University community on safety and security

President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri has issued the following message to the University community:

I am pleased to learn and would like to share with you that our two students who were injured March 6th when a firearm was discharged in the Student Centre on our Keele campus are expected to make a full recovery. York University continues to work with the Toronto Police Service in their investigation.

In light of this incident, I have asked that the following actions be undertaken immediately:

  • Senior University officials will meet with the Toronto Police Service to review the incident and to provide joint recommendations to improve campus safety and security;
  • York Security Services to post dedicated security staff on site in the Food Court at the Student Centre;
  • Discussions to be held with the Student Centre about augmenting security in and around the Student Centre with video cameras.

The safety and security of the York University community is paramount. We are working closely with our York University Community Safety Council to ensure that our plans, policies and procedures continue to be reviewed and enhanced, and to build on the major enhancements achieved over the last few years.
