Labour migration and unfree labour will be the focus of Thursday’s panel discussion looking at Canada’s temporary labour programs and the role of law in constructing migrant worker insecurity.
Labour Migration, “Unfree Labour”, and Resistance, part of the Global Labour Speakers Series, will take place March 13, from noon to 2pm, 519 Kaneff Tower, Keele campus. The panel will also examine migrant and immigrant worker resistance against temporary agency exploitation. Everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.
The session will include presentations from: Aziz Choudry, a professor of international education in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education, Faculty of Education, McGill University; Adrian Smith, a professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies, Carleton University, and a member of Justicia For Migrant Workers at Carleton; Sonia Singh, an organizer with Workers Action Centre; and Fay Faraday, a visiting professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and the incoming Packer Chair in Social Justice, as well as a lawyer with an independent social justice practice in Toronto. Geraldina Polanco, a postdoctoral Fellow at York University, will act as a discussant.
The Global Labour Speaker Series is a collaboration of the Global Labour Research Centre, the Work & Labour Studies Program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LAPS), the Canada Research Chair in Comparative Political Economy and the Canada Research Chair in the Political Economy of Gender & Work. It is co-sponsored by Migration Matters and the departments of geography, social science and sociology in LAPS.
