On Wednesday, March 19, 2014, Toronto Police Service (TPS) Financial Crimes arrested three persons in the 2012 fraud in the Division of Continuing Education. It is alleged that between November 2005 and October 2012, $1.6 million was misappropriated from York University. York has been working closely with TPS on the investigation. See below York University’s response to the situation.
Statement from York University
York University became aware of an alleged fraud in October 2012 when a whistleblower came forward with information about suspicious activity. The University immediately contacted Toronto Police Service and has co-operated with them during the course of their investigation. We engaged an external firm to conduct a forensic audit, the findings of which were provided to police.
The University successfully engaged in action to recover the monies defrauded, plus costs.
York University takes its fiduciary responsibilities very seriously as an institution entrusted with monies from our students and the public.
