York University Lions football player Errol Brooks has signed a contract with the Canadian Football League (CFL)’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The 5-foot-7, 175-pound running back from Toronto attended the regional combine in March and made an impression on league scouts with his speed, putting up the fastest time by a running back at the event.
He completed his first and only season with the Lions in 2013 and was a force on offence, finishing third in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and 10th in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport in total rushing yards (701) and third in yards per carry (6.9). He twice rushed for more than 190 yards in a game to be recognized as an OUA peak performer. At the end of the season he was named an OUA first-team all-star, the first player from York to receive the honour since 2007.
At the end of the season he was named York’s most valuable offensive player.
Brooks is one of two Lions joining CFL teams this off season. James Tuck, a defensive line man,was selected in the fourth round or 31st overall by the Montreal Alouettes in the league’s entry draft earlier this month.
