Graduate symposium looks to create healthy community for Toronto youth

The annual LaMarsh Centre for Child and Youth Research graduate student symposium will look at ways to create a healthy community for Toronto’s Youth.

The symposium, called “A Healthy Community for Toronto’s Youth: How Researchers and Youth can Work Together to Push the Envelope to Effect Change,” is being held in partnership with York’s City Institute, C.W. Jefferys Collegiate and Westview Collegiate Institute. Students will be bussed from the two schools to York to participate in the symposium.

The youth engagement initiative seeks to connect young people and researchers, to help researchers ensure that their work is applicable to the common experiences of Toronto’s youth. It is also an opportunity to help youth share their knowledge about what’s relevant to and missing from the dialogue about their health-related needs.

The goal is to inspire both researchers and youth to continue a dialogue about important youth-focused topics as they pertain to healthy community.

A Healthy Community for Toronto’s Youth will take place Monday, June 2, from 9am to 1pm, at 519 Kaneff Tower, Keele campus. Registration and refreshments start at 8:30am with opening remarks by Professor Yvonne Bohr, director of the LaMarsh Centre for Child and Youth Research, and student leadership reps Bramilee Dhayanandhan, Jeremy Douchette and Wafa Saoud. Lunch will be included.

LaMarsh graduate students, as well as a visiting student from the University of Rome and two City Institute grad students, will present papers dealing with relationships, mental health and addictions, geography/physical environment, physical health, culture/values/beliefs and education/career/future, followed by breakout discussions and lunch.
