Faculty of Science welcomes incoming Dean Ray Jayawardhana

York University's Faculty of Science marked a major milestone in its history as staff, faculty and students took time from their busy schedules to welcome incoming Dean Ray Jayawardhana. The occasion also provided an opportunity for the Faculty of Science community to thank Interim Dean Don Hastie for his leadership.

The reception took place June 4 in the Life Sciences Building on the Keele campus.

Some 100 people attended the afternoon reception, including York University President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri and York Vice-President Academic Rhonda Lenton.

In his remarks, Shoukri credited Hastie for his invaluable work in advancing the Faculty of Science especially through its transition to become a full faculty following the formation of the Lassonde School of Engineering. “Don rose to the occasion of guiding the new Faculty of Science with ease,” said Shoukri. “I cannot commend him enough for his leadership through this period, as he ensured the transition was as seamless as possible for the University.”

Lenton also took time to thank Hastie and offered a warm welcome to Jayawardhana. "Don has not just been a 'caretaker' Interim Dean; he has led the Faculty with a deft and calm hand through some very exciting but at the same time challenging times for the Faculty and the University," said Lenton. "I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for the Faculty."

Jayawardhana’s appointment was announced with much anticipation earlier this year. On July 1, he officially begins his role at York University as dean of the Faculty of Science.

Shoukri welcomed Jayawardhana to York University, and commended him for his strong commitment to community engagement and science education, saying that he looks forward to working with him in the new role. "As York continues to define itself as Canada’s leading engaged University, Ray’s track record of scientific outreach will be a huge asset to our academic community, and to our leadership team."
