York University Lions women’s volleyball team members Cadence Currie and Abby Ganzhorn teamed up to win the under-18 gold medal at the Ontario provincial beach volleyball championships on Sunday, Aug. 10.

Currie, an outside hitter, and Ganzhorn, a middle blocker, will both be rookies on the Lions this season.

The duo finished in first place in a field of 16 teams in the 18U Premier division. After a strong run through pool play and a pair of wins in the quarter-finals and semifinals, they defeated Amanda Harnett and Rachel Marcus in the final to claim the title.

For Currie, it is her fifth straight provincial gold medal at the Ontario beach championships, and in the last four years she has also won two national silver medals.

Currie and Ganzhorn are two of the six new recruits who will be suiting up for the Lions this fall. They will make their Ontario University Athletics regular-season debut against the team’s fiercest rival, the Ottawa Gee-Gees, on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
