Bill C-36, The Protection Of Communities And Exploited Persons Act, is the Conservative government’s new legal framework for the sex work industry, reported NOW Magazine’s Sept. 11-18 issue…. While C-36 bans third-party advertising,… the advertising aspect of the law can only be enforced if the advertising originates in Canada…. Osgoode Hall Law School Professor Bruce Ryder points out that “It’s hard to imagine how they overcome the jurisdictional limits on Canadian law and the practical obstacles to prosecuting people.” Read full story.

When student Bridget Liang of Hamilton, Ont., went shopping for a university, she chose York University, partly because of its many gender-neutral, single-stall washrooms spread around campus, reported University Affairs Sept. 10. Ms. Liang is a transgendered woman. For her, large public restrooms can be terrifying places, where bullies feel free to deliver dirty looks, hurtful comments, even a punch. Read full story.

Study finds gaming augments players’ social lives
New research finds that online social behaviour isn’t replacing offline social behaviour in the gaming community, reported The Rock River Times Sept. 10. Instead, online gaming is expanding players’ social lives. The study was done by researchers at North Carolina State University, York University and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.
