New book 'Liberating Temporariness?' launches Thursday

Liberating Temporariness book coverA new book, Liberating Temporariness?, edited by three York University professors, will launch Thursday in Toronto.

The editors, York University political science Professor Leah F. Vosko, geography Professor Valerie Preston and political science Professor Robert Latham, all of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, will be on hand for the launch, organized by the publisher McGill-Queen’s University Press.

There will also be remarks by Erika Gates-Gasse of the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants, Alison Mountz of Wilfrid Laurier University and Chris Ramsaroop of Justicia for Migrant Workers (J4MW).

The launch will take place Sept. 18, 5 to 7pm, in the Nexus Lounge, 12th Floor, south side, of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto, 252 Bloor St. W., Toronto.

Liberating Temporariness? Migration, Work, and Citizenship in an Age of Insecurity explores the institutionalization of temporariness as a condition of life for a growing number of people worldwide. It considers growing complexities surrounding the legal status of migrants and refugees, deepening precariousness in employment and mounting limitations on social rights.

The contributors chart the Canadian experience as contrasted with developments in Europe, Australia and the United States, and offer alternative possibilities for security and liberation.
