Yorku.ca home page moves to responsive design

York University relaunches its home page this week following a complete redesign.

Led by Communications and Public Affairs (C&PA) and University Information Technology (UIT), the new home page features a sleek, modern look and is now responsive on user devices, meaning it adapts to a smartphone, tablet or desktop. It also offers a streamlined navigation, a change based on research including data collected on user behaviour obtained through Google Analytics. The new design addresses the key need of mobile compatibility and brings York University’s home page into full compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities (AODA) legislation.

“The home page of a website is the front door to the institution and provides a key opportunity to create a positive impact,” says Susan Webb, chief communications and marketing officer (C&PA). “The new home page incorporates our branding and highlights our strengths through the design and content. New secondary pages further reinforce what sets York University apart.”

The new look of the website offers a strong visual presence with larger photos and an improved browsing experience. A new section titled “Featured Stories” is part of an easy-to-navigate series of pages showcasing the latest news from the University.

A “Quick Links” section, found on the top right-hand corner of the page, once expanded, will feature a set of high-level links organized by categories that are audience or task specific. The Faculty/Staff link can now be found in the “Quick Links” section.

The University’s key audiences have been given prime consideration in the new look of the home page. The site features a revamped About York U section, which includes a number of new pages, and a brand-new Campus Life page.

“This is a result of our collaborative work with York’s Communications and Public Affairs team, with input from campus partners, current students, data from Google Analytics and previous research with future students,” notes Bob Gagne, chief information officer, UIT. “The needs and expectations of our community are constantly evolving and our goal is to evolve the website as well.”

In conjunction with making the site responsive and AODA compliant, members of the York University community can find new branded PowerPoint and social media templates as well as a new secondary colour palette.
