How do we build healthier communities?
That’s the central question a panel of a diverse group researchers from York University will address as part of the Building Healthy Lives and Communities panel discussion and research celebration Nov. 24 from 2:30 to 4:30pm at the Lassonde Building, Keele campus.
“This research celebration provides an opportunity for members of the York community to learn more about the breadth of research at York that seeks to address how to build healthier communities,” said Robert Haché, vice-president research and innovation. “Throughout the year, we are highlighting research in the six areas of York’s comprehensive research strengths, as described in our Strategic Research Plan, Building on Strength.”
The panel and celebration will highlight research underway on a number of topics, including:
- environment and community health;
- community-driven solutions for improving children’s physical activity, participation, health and fitness;
- social inclusion and well-being as important determinants of health;
- the Pre-Diabetes Detection and Physical Activity Intervention Delivery (PRE-PAID) Project; and
- the development of new definitions of active, healthy ageing, which include those who reside and those who work in the community known as long-term residential care among other topics.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to the discussion, which will take place in the Lassonde Building Lobby. The event will feature mini-research byte presentations followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
Featured presenters include: Faculty of Health Professors Angelo Belcastro, Michaela Hynie and Michael Riddell; Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies Professors Pat Armstrong and Valerie Preston; Lassonde School of Engineering Professor Andrew Eckford; and Faculty of Environmental Studies Professor Harris Ali.
Each presenter will be addressing the research question from the perspective of their research areas.
