Sports recap: Women's hockey Lions explode for five goals in win over Ryerson Rams

The York University Lions women's hockey team routed the Ryerson University Rams by a score of 5-0 on Sunday at Canlan Ice Sports. The Lions were efficient in their counter attacks as three of the goals came from interceptions in their defensive half.

The Lions took an early lead at 2:28 through rookie forward Justine Treadwell after a successful counter attack initiated by Sarah Conway. Treadwell beat goaltender Ally Sarna by firing to the top corner of the net.

Lisa Stathopulos almost scored the Lions' second goal two minutes after the restart, but her shot was stopped. The Lions led 1-0 after one period. More details on the York Lions website.

One day earlier, the Lions fell in a shootout to their other City of Toronto rivals, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, but a score of 2-1.

In the shootout, both goalies – York's Megan Lee and Toronto's Nicole Kesteris – saved the first two shots each. Finally, Rianna Langford curved the puck around Kesteris to give the Lions the advantage. More details.

Men’s basketball Lions pass century mark in victory over Thunderbirds

The York University Lions men's basketball team conquered the Algoma University Thunderbirds 110-75 in a home game on Saturday at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The Lions played an impressive game, scoring a total of 18 three-pointers en route to their highest offensive output of the season. There were also some electric plays with a pair of big dunks in the second half.

The first dunk came when Nick Tufegdzich intercepted the ball from the Thunderbirds, then ran alone to dunk the ball into the net in the third quarter. The second dunk came in the fourth quarter from Nana Adu-Poku in the last minutes of play, which sent the crowd roaring.  More details.

Women’s basketball Lions get first win with defeat of Thunderbirds

The York University Lions women's basketball team won its first game of the season by a score of 69-33 against the Algoma University Thunderbirds in a home game at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday evening.

The Lions opened up the scoring with a jump shot from Courtney Osborne, which was quickly followed by two jump shots from the Thunderbirds. Osborne continued to push through scoring a three-point jump shot and two jump shots for the Lions.

Emma Thompson pounded in two three-point jump shots for the Lions in the first, ending the quarter 18-9.  More details.

Men’s hockey Lions snap skid with win over Badgers

The York University Lions men's hockey team recorded a road win against the Brock University Badgers with a score of 2-1 on Friday, snapping a three-game skid and getting back into the win column.

Michael Santini scored the first goal in the first period of the game at 5:39. Santini now has a total of six goals in the season. The Badgers equalized through a power play goal after the first intermission at 16:21. Andrew Radjenovic scored the goal through a pass from Sammy Banga.  More details.

The next day, the Lions were defeated by a score of 3-1 by the No. 6 nationally ranked University of Windsor Lancers in their annual ALS Awareness Game.

Lancers rookie defender JC Houde opened the scoring in less than a minute of play. The Lions were caught off-guard during the defensive transition.

Six minutes in, Shayne Rover shot a powerful attempt that goaltender Taylor Speed could only deflect. The Lions kept up the pressure for the rest of the period. Kyle Campbell had a one-on-one opportunity but his shot was safely held by Speed.  More details.

Men’s volleyball Lions cruise to convincing win over Paladins

The York University Lions men's volleyball team overcame the Royal Military College (RMC)  Paladins in straight sets in a home game on Sunday at the Tait McKenzie Centre to wrap up their fall semester.

The Lions won the first set 25-20, the second 25-19 and the third 25-10.

In the first, Grant Lynch and Marko Dakic were on fire with blocks, kills and assists to aid the York attack. The Paladins took the lead with a score of 15-12, until the Lions powerful hits helped them take the first set by five points.  More details.

Also this past weekend, the Lions were defeated in four sets by the Queen’s University Gaels. The Gaels won the first two sets by matching 25-21 scores. The Lions pulled one back at the third with a tight game at 25-23. The Gaels responded with an emphatic 25-15 win at the fourth set for a road win.  More details.

Women’s volleyball Lions bounce back with win over Paladins

The York University Lions women's volleyball team defeated the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins in straight sets on Sunday in a home game at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

York's exceptional blocking from Michelle Pierce and Brittney Hopley assisted the Lions victory. The Lions won the first set 25-19, the second 25-14 and the third 25-14.

In the first set, the Lions looked shaky when many of their hits went out-of-bounds, aiding the Paladins to be in the lead 16-12.  More details.

The previous day, the Lions were defeated in four sets by the Queen’s University Gaels. The Gaels won the first two sets by a score of 25-18 and 27-25, respectively. The Lions pulled one back with a score of 25-19. However, the Gaels were able to seal their win in the fourth set with a tight match at 26-24.  More details.

Track and field Lions post 23 podium finishes at Christmas Open

The York University Lions track and field team recorded 23 podium finishes at is annual Christmas Open meet at the Toronto Track and Field Centre on Saturday.

In addition to the hardware, two Lions also qualified for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships and a total of three meet records fell on the day.

Throwers Brittany Crew and Eric Brathwaite, medallists at the national championships last year, have already qualified for the CIS meet this season thanks to their strong performances on Saturday. Crew qualified in the shot put and Brathwaite in the weight throw, and both finished first at the open.

Crew's distance of 15.16m in the shot put was also a new meet record, and she also won the weight throw with a distance of 15.97m. Brathwaite was also a double gold-medallist, winning the shot put with a throw of 16.46m.  More details.
