Offered through the Science Engagement Office at York University, York Science Saturdays return this month with a new and interesting series of workshops. Using an interactive, hands-on approach to learning, students in Grades 3 to 8 explore hot topics in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The workshops introduce students to innovative research and are taught by undergraduate and graduate students studying science and engineering. All workshops run from 1 to 4pm at York University’s Keele campus.

The next York Science Saturdays are:

  • Saturday, Jan. 24 – Applied Physics & Engineering;
  • Saturday, Feb. 7 – Integrated Biomedical Science; and
  • Saturday, Feb. 21 – Environmental Engineering & Chemistry.

The early-bird registration fee for all three workshops is $50 (available until Jan 9). The fee increases to $60 thereafter.

The Science Engagement Office also offers programming in an all-girls environment and provides girls in Grades 3 to 8 with the opportunity to learn how to apply different elements of science and engineering to solve real-life problems. The workshops include an all-encompassing capstone project. Participants will be introduced to female mentors and role models studying and working in STEM professions and research.

The next all-girls York Science Saturdays workshops are:

  • Saturday, Feb. 28 – Electrical and Computer Engineering;
  • Saturday, March 7 – Mechanical and Civil Engineering; and
  • Saturday, March 14 – Marine Biology and Life Science.

The early-bird registration fee for all three workshops is $45 (available until Jan. 9). The fee increases to $50 thereafter.
