McLaughlin College presents its annual Public Policy Lecture, “Overseeing CSIS: The Federal Court’s Role,” taking place on Jan. 22, from 5:30 to 6:30pm, in 014 McLaughlin College.
Delivering the lecture is Federal Court Justice James O’Reilly, a Fellow of McLaughlin College with a background of specializing in legal policy and law reform. As a former consultant to the Law Reform Commission of Canada, executive legal officer at the Supreme Court of Canada as well as other positions held within Canadian law; O'Reilly will be exploring the concept of court security as part of his presentation for the annual lecture.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) is a federal organization dedicated to protecting Canadians from security threats. In this lecture, O’Reilly will describe the court’s responsibilities in the area of national security, with particular reference to recent controversies relating to the court’s jurisdiction that have led to proposed amendments to the CSIS Act.
Appointed to the Federal Court in 2002, O’Reilly is the author of many publications and has taught law at several universities.
