Five students win prizes in Glendon Students Visual Arts Competition

Five winners of the Glendon Students Visual Arts Competition have been chosen out of 29 students exhibiting 50 original works at the Glendon Gallery of York University.

The works, exhibited at the gallery until Jan. 30, are in a variety of mediums – acrylic and oil paint on canvas, watercolours, drawings, sketches, mixed media, sculpture and photographs.

The winners were recognized at the opening reception Tuesday, Jan. 20, in front of Glendon College Principal Donald Ipperciel; Rosanna Furgiuele, associate principal student services; Jaclyn Volkhammer; a representative of the Friends of Glendon; and Christian Lopez, vice-president operations, Glendon College Student Union.

The winners are:

First prize of $250, sponsored by the vice-provost students, York University, was awarded to Estela Williams for her artwork titled La douleur exquise.

Second prize of $200 offered by the principal of Glendon College was awarded to Emily Allen for her artwork titled La petite robe bleue.

The recipient of the third prize, sponsored by the Friends of Glendon in the amount of $175, was awarded to Amalia Johnson for her artwork titled Looking From The Outside In.

Fourth prize of $150 was awarded by the associate principal, student services, Glendon College, to Serge Ruel for his artwork titled Tons de musique.

Fifth prize of $100, offered by the Glendon College Student Union, was awarded to Valeriya Goncharova for her artwork titled Giving Life to the Freedom of Expression.

Honourable mention to Hilary Simpson for her two artworks – Confusion of Self and En dormant.

The following were this year’s jury members: André Pilon, a visual artist and photographer, and a member of Bravo-Sud; Emmanuel Albano, a filmmaker and technical director of Le LABO, Toronto’s Francophone Media Arts Centre; and Ron Loranger, contemporary and abstract painter, and a member of Le LABO.

Glendon Gallery operates within the Division of Student Services at Glendon College, York University, under the direction of Furgiuele. Gallery curator is Marc Audette and exhibit coordinator is Martine Rheault.

Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday, noon to 3pm, and Saturday from 1 to 4pm. Glendon Gallery is at Glendon College, York University, 2275 Bayview Ave., Toronto.
