Sports recap: Lions beat Lancers and earn quarter-final home court

The York University Lions men's volleyball crushed the University of Windsor Lancers in straight sets for the last game of the season on Sunday at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

Graduating players Ray Szeto and Nikola Sandic came out on the top of the leader boards with Szeto contributed 15.5 points with nine kills, four service aces, three blocks and three digs, while Sandic led with 27 assists.

The Lions finish the season in fourth in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) standings with 26 points and a 13-7 record, while the Lancers finish in eighth with 18 points and a 9-11 record. With the fourth place finish, the Lions will host fifth place Queen's University Gaels in the quarter finals of the OUA playoffs on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Prior to Sunday’s game, York University Sport & Recreation honoured its graduating players Szeto, Sandic and Marko Dakic for their tremendous careers over the last five seasons. More details.

On Saturday afternoon, the Lions beat the Western University Mustangs in four sets.

The hosts started out strongly as Arthur Swarcz opened the Lions scoring with a powerful spike that could only be deflected wide.

At 9-9, Josh Henderson powered a hit that overpowered the defenders. The Mustangs continued to struggle in returning the Lions' attempts. More details.

Lions post big results at Akron Invitational

The York University Lions track and field team was in Akron, Ohio, this past weekend for the 2015 Akron Invitational and returned home with plenty of big performances under their belts.

The team combined to record six podium finishes at the meet, including a trio of gold medals by Sheereen Harris, Jameel Brown and Lucas Watson. More details. 

Lions sweep Lancers in regular season finale

The York University Lions women's volleyball team defeated the University of Windsor Lancers in straight sets in their last game of the season on Sunday at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The first set was a grueling battle between both sides as the Lancers came back at the end of the set to threaten the Lions lead. The Lancers were able to constantly tie the score, but the Lions held their lead until the score was tied at 21-21. More details.

Prior to the game, York University Sport & Recreation honoured a trio of graduating student-athletes for their contributions to the program over the last several years. Athletes recognized were libero Jennifer Black, as well as middle blockers Brittney Hopley and Michelle Pierce. More details.

A day earlier, the Lions team lost in four sets against the Western University Mustangs. The Lions won the first set 25-20, but Western came back to take the second 25-19. They then cruised to the third set win, at 25-11, and won the fourth 25-22 to take the match. More details.

Five Lions score double digits and beat the Badgers

The York University Lions men's basketball team defeated the Brock University Badgers 101-89 on Saturday in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Lions turned the game around in the third quarter with a tremendous effort from Richard Iheadindu, Nathan Culbreath, Phillip Cunningham-Gillen and Nick Tufegdzich who put the Lions in the lead with 63-57 heading into the fourth. More details.

Sheppard scores twice in loss to Rams

The York University Lions men's hockey team was routed by the Ryerson University Rams 7-3 on Thursday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ont.

The Rams drew first blood in the first period at 12:19 through a short-handed goal by Kyle Blaney. The Lions quickly responded with a power play goal by Derek Sheppard 15 seconds later. Mitch VanTeeling assisted the goal. More details.

Two nights later, the Lions lost their final game of the season to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 in overtime at Canlan Ice Sports.

The most action erupted in the last five minutes of the second period after the Varsity Blues broke the deadlock at 15:19. The Lions defence split up and spread out, giving Dylan Heide an excellent chance to skate through the middle and launch the puck behind Chris Perugini. More details.

Koudys scores career-high; Lions lose to Badgers

The York University Lions women's basketball team fell to the Brock University Badgers 75-66 on Saturday in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Badgers opened up the game with a jump shot from Kira Cornelissen and a three-point jump shot from Kayla Santilli that was quickly countered by Shauney Fischer and Ishanaa Seupersadsingh, Emma Thompson, who made a three-point jump shot, and Taylor Ross, who made two jump shots, were able to add seven more points to the scoreboard. The Badgers netted 23 points in the first quarter, putting them in the lead 23-11. More details.
