Sports recap: Lions knock off Gaels to advance to OUA semis

The York University Lions men's volleyball team displayed a thrilling performance in a 3-1 victory over the Queen's University Gaels in their Ontario University Athletics (OUA) quarter-final match on Sunday at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The Gaels took the first set 25-19, but the Lions stormed back to take the next three 25-22, 29-27, 25-20 to secure the win and advance to the OUA semifinals for the second time in the last three seasons. More details on York Lions website.

Lions finish fifth, seventh at OUA championships

The York University Lions men's wrestling team finished in fifth place at the OUA wrestling championships in Sudbury, Ont., on Saturday, while the women's team put together a seventh-place showing.

Ali Koca was the gold medal in the 120-kilogram weight division, defeating Ahmed Ramadan of the McMaster University Marauders in the final. He was also named an OUA first-team all-star for his efforts.

The highlight on the women's side came courtesy of rookie Alexandria Town, who won the silver medal in the 51-kilogram division and earned OUA second-team all-star honours. She is the first York women's wrestler to win a medal at the OUA championships in program history. More details.

Lions finish second and third at Windsor Team Challenge

The York University track & field team posted big results over the weekend (Feb. 13-14) en route to the men’s team capturing silver and the women taking home bronze at the Windsor Team Challenge.

The biggest result of the weekend was Brittany Crew’s throw in the shot put of 15.15 metres and Khamica Bingham’s 60-metre run of 7.34 seconds, which earned them both golds and set new meet records. Crew also took home the bronze in the weight throw with a 17.07-metre toss. More details. 

Lions end season with upset over No. 10 Blues

The York University Lions women's hockey team posted a 3-1 victory over the No. 10 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues in their last game of the season on Friday in Toronto.

The Blues took the lead in the first period with a smashing shot at 14:28 from Kristi Riseley. Blues goalie Katey Teekasingh did not allow the puck to slip by her during the first as she saved eight shots, while Lions goalie Megan Lee also saved eight shots in the first. More details.

A night prior, the Lions were eliminated from playoff contention with a 1-0 loss to the Ryerson University Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

Lee made the same number of stops as Ryerson goalie, Alex Armstrong, at 30 saves. The Lions managed to create more shots on target in the first two periods with a combined tally of 20 shots. However, the Rams pressured the Lions in the final period, managing 15 shots to the opposition's 10. More details.

Ravens top Lions despite 22 from Seupersadsingh

The York University Lions women's basketball team was defeated by a score of 59-46 by the visiting Carleton University Ravens in its regular-season home finale on Sunday afternoon at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

Third-year guard Ishanaa Seupersadsingh put together the best performance of her season with a game-high 22 points and also added two rebounds and two assists. She was 9-of-19 from the floor in 32 minutes of action. More details.

Prior to the start of the game, York University Sport & Recreation recognized its two graduating players, forwards Courtney Osborne and Hayley Finn.

On Friday night, the Lions lost 79-42 against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The visitors started strongly with an opening basket and a three-pointer from a turnover. The Gee-Gees took advantage of the Lions' soft defence to extend their lead before the Lions called a timeout at 9-0. More details.

Berhanemeskel moves to third all-time in Gee-Gees win over Lions

The York University Lions men's basketball team lost 90-57 against the No. 2 University of Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday at Tait McKenzie Centre.

Guard Johnny Berhanemeskel scored a game-high 27 points, with the 15th moving him into third place all-time in the OUA with 1,931 points. He also added six rebounds, four assists and a steal. More details.

On Sunday afternoon, The No. 1 Carleton University Ravens proved why they are the best team in the country with an 87-45 victory over the Lions.

The Ravens asserted their dominance early and often, taking a 29-11 lead after the first quarter and a commanding 49-16 advantage into the half. The Lions finally found their stroke in the third quarter by matching their total production from the first half, but it was not enough to slow down Carleton, which padded its lead to 75-32 after three and finished with the 42-point win.
