The York University Lions track & field team combined to win 17 medals and break or tie three meet records at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships this past weekend at the Toronto Track & Field Centre.
The men's team finished in second place with 135.5 points, just 20 points away from capturing their first OUA championship in program history; while the women's team tallied 83 points, which was good for fifth place.
Of the 17 medals won, 11 were gold, four were silver and two were bronze. More details on the York Lions website.
Town, Koca finish fifth at CIS championships
York University Lions wrestlers Alexandria Town and Ali Koca both finished in fifth place in their respective weight classes at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships at the University of Alberta in Edmonton on Saturday.
Town, the first York women's wrestler ever to compete at the CIS championships, finished fifth in the 51 kilogram division with an overall record of 2-2 at the event.
Koca, who won the OUA gold medal to qualify, placed fifth in the 120 kilogram weight class with an overall record of 1-2. More details.
Host Huskies top Lions to win consolation final
Fourth-year left side Jordan Nowakowski powered the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15) victory over the York University Lions in the consolation final of the CIS Men's Volleyball Championship at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon on Saturday. On Friday, three-time all-Canadian Ray Szeto powered the No. 7 seeded Lions to a 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 23-25, 16-14) consolation semifinal victory over Ontario rival, the University of Waterloo Warriors, with 26 kills Friday afternoon in the first consolation semifinal match. More details.
In the Lions' opening match of the national championship on Thursday, the No. 2 seeded Dalhousie University Tigers fended off a comeback bid from the Lions with a 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 16-25, 15-13) win in the first quarter-final. More details.
Comeback falls short as Voyageurs end Lions' season
The Lions fell to the No. 9 Laurentian University Voyageurs 87-84 on Wednesday in the first round of the road to the Wilson Cup Final Four at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
After the Lions were behind by eight points for the majority of the game, in the fourth quarter they closed the gap to a one-point difference. More details.
