It is with great sadness that the Office of the President announces the death of our colleague and friend Jeff Honsinger. On Friday, Aug. 28, just two weeks shy of his 58th birthday, Jeff died after battling an aggressive form of cancer.
A dedicated member of Office of the President team for the past eight years, Jeff is remembered not only as a committed colleague, but as someone who was approachable and funny, loved to tell stories, and had a kind and generous spirit.
“Jeff was an incredibly loyal and hard-working colleague who loved to talk and laugh, who took great pride in what he did and who was always willing to help others,” said York University President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri. “He will be greatly missed, but he will be remembered through his many contributions to the office, and in our memory of the kind of person he was and the great enjoyment he took in life.”
As he began cancer treatments this year, the staff in the Office of the President presented Jeff with a “Super Jeff” figurine to remind him of all the people supporting him. “Super Jeff” was inscribed with a series of words that his colleagues felt best described Jeff, including: helpful, thoughtful, kind, considerate, approachable, friendly, dedicated, loyal, reliable and funny.
Jeff grew up in Montreal and attended Concordia University. He was the husband of Lucy Cofini; father of Addison, Francesca and Chance; proud grandfather (“Papa”) of Kiara Goetz; beloved son of Marilyn Honsinger of Lachine, Que. Jeff was predeceased by his daughter Storme Honsinger and his father Alfred Honsinger. Jeff will be missed by his sister Jennifer Kellie and her family, his many cousins and his colleagues at York University. He is loved and remembered by his in-laws, Claudio and Santina Cofini of Mississauga, Ont., as well as the entire Cofini and DeSantis families. Jeff’s family thanks Dr. Paul Zeni and the staff at Georgetown Hospital for their care and compassion.
Friends will be received at the J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home at 11582 Trafalgar Rd., north of Maple Avenue, in Georgetown, Ont., on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 1pm until the 2pm memorial service in the chapel. For more information, call 905-877-3631.
Jeff’s family invites all guests to wear red and white to the memorial in celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation or to Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills would be appreciated. In Jeff’s honour and memory, the York University flags will be lowered to half-mast on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 4, and they will remain that way until the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 5.
