Nour Ghoneim and Kiyani Johnson each scored a pair of goals to lead the York University Lions women's soccer team to a 7-1 victory over the Brock University Badgers in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at York Stadium.
Ghoneim’s first of the contest, scored in the eighth minute, turned out to be the game winner and she added another just four minutes into the second half for the team's fourth goal of the contest.
Second-year striker Christina Morelli opened the scoring just three minutes into the game after tapping in a pass from midfielder Sarah Won. Ghoneim made it 2-0 on a successful penalty kick after Sydney Hoareau drew the foul. More details on the York Lions website.
One day later, the Lions extended their season-opening winning streak to three games with a 2-1 comeback victory over the University of Windsor Lancers.
In the 54th minute in the second half, the Lancers opened the scoring with a tally poked by York U goalkeeper Taylor Grant after a defensive breakdown that led to an odd-man advantage in the direction of York's net, ultimately leading to the opening goal by Lacey Marcoux. More details.
