And the winners of the Red & White photo competition are...

After what was possibly the most spirited and enthusiastic Red & White Day in York University history, the results are in for the Spirit Selfie, Team Selfie and YorkU Moments photo competitions that took place on Oct. 1.

For “Team Selfie,” professors, staff and students were invited to coordinate with their colleagues to wear York gear or red and white, and take a photo of their spirit in action. For the Spirit Selfie, individuals or groups who have captured their #YUSpirit in a photograph were encouraged to submit the pictures for consideration – the more red and white in the photo, the better! The YorkU Moments category was created to invite photo submissions that embody  York University spirit through shots of campus life, landscapes, buildings or sport and recreation.

The judges certainly had their work cut out for them this year, as competition was fierce. Hundreds of students, staff and faculty submitted photos, with one winner selected in each category. Contest entries for the competition were judged by faculty representative Anna Hudson, an associate professor in the Department of Visual Art and Art History in the School of Arts, Media, Performance & Design. Hudson was joined by Michael Zusev, chair of the Photography Club at York and photo editor for the Excalibur student newspaper, as well as staff member Donna Cope, director of Strategic Communications for the Division of Students.

There were many other spirit-filled photos taken by York U community members on Red & White Day. They can be found on various social media channels under the hashtag #YUSpirit.

At the Red & White Day festivities on Oct. 1, participants had the opportunity to celebrate the incredible season of the Lions Women’s Tennis team, York University student-athletes who competed in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games this summer, as well as the University’s FISU athletes. Other highlights of the day included an inflatable carnival, a #YUTweetup with York President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri and a screening of the student film Leftover.
