Book launch and panel discussion explores working women during Second World War

Working memory book coverAn event to mark the launch of a book co-edited by York University Professor Marlene Kadar will take place on Nov. 4 from 2:30 to 4:30pm at 305 Founders College.

Hosted by the Centre for Feminist Research and co-sponsored by the Department of Humanities, School of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies, the event presents Working Memory: Women and Work in World War II.

Published by Wilfrid Laurier University Press (2015), the book explores the work of women during the Second World War. It looks at the labour of survival, resistance and collaboration, and the labour of recording, representing and memorializing these wartime experiences.

The contents speak to the making of history, and the book brings scholarly attention to the roles of women during the war that have been hidden, masked, undervalued or forgotten.

Kadar, a professor in the Department of Humanities and the School of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies at York University, co-edited the book with Jeanne Perreault, who recently retired from the University of Calgary where she taught women’s writing, indigenous literature and American literature.

Kadar will be at the event, along with a panel of colleagues and contributors, including Doug Freake, Eva C. Karpinski and Patrick Taylor.

Light refreshments provided. To RSVP, email juliapyr@yorku.ca.
