The Faculty of Education will welcome Jennifer Kelly, the 2015 visiting Jean Augustine Chair in Education in the New Urban Environment, from Nov. 23 to 28.
Kelly, a professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Alberta, is the author of several journal articles and three books. Her current areas of interest and research include racialization, immigration, and the social historical formation of African Canadian communities in Alberta. Some of her past research projects include an exploration of how processes of immigration and racialization affected the social formation of African Canadian communities in Alberta from the 1900s to the 1960s.
Some of the planned events for Kelly’s visit include:
- Researching Historically Marginalized Groups – A Case Study of African Canadian Community Formation and Implications for Education, Nov. 24, 12:30 to 2pm, 109 Atkinson College
- Fireside Chat about Surviving Graduate School as a Student of Colour, Nov. 25, 4 to 5:30pm, Senior Common Room (021 Winters College)

The Jean Augustine Chair in Education in the New Urban Environment, named after the Honorable Jean Augustine, was designed to enrich a multitude of activities at York University with research and academic expertise in the areas of educational policy and practice, immigration, community engagement, and cultural diversity.
The chair supports Canada’s next generation of teachers, educational leaders and researchers working to improve schooling in contemporary metropolitan cities.
