Kevin Jones, associate professor of physical education from 1970 to 1996 at York University, has died. A memorial service for Professor Jones will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6 from 1 to 5pm at the St Louis Bar & Grill, 5307 Yonge Street (between Finch and Sheppard).
Prof. Jones' academic interests were the history of sport and physical education, Olympic history, water polo, squash, sport and Canadian culture. He was an active member of the Canadian Water Polo Association (CWPA) and was its official historian. He was a CWPA national referee from 1968 to 1974 and a member of National Team selection committee for the 1972 Canadian Olympic Association. He coached York University varsity men's water polo team from 1970 to 1989.
Prof. Jones served as the coordinator of undergraduate studies in physical education in mid-1970s.
His contribution to college life was initiated as a Fellow of Calumet College. He served as Stong College Academic Adviser between 1977 and 1980 (one year with Master Virginia Rock, and two years with Master Hedi Bouraoui), after which he remained an active Stong College Fellow. Prof. Jones then served as Master of Stong College between 1993 and 1996 during Stong's 25th Anniversary in 1994. Among his many accomplishments, Prof. Jones advanced Rock's nomination for an honorary degree, pursued the naming of the Hedi Bouraoui Master's Dining Room, the Allen Koretsky Computer-Assisted Writing Centre, and the Steve Dranitsaris Committee Room.
He was awarded the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association- Distinguished Education Award in 1972.
Prior to joining York University, Professor Jones was a Water Polo coach and player at the University of Alberta.
