The York University Lions men's hockey team snapped the University of Waterloo Warriors' Ontario University Athletics (OUA) best eight game winning streak on Friday night with a 2-1 victory at Columbia Icefield in Waterloo, Ont.
In net, Chris Perugini made 21 saves for his 11th win of the year, while Waterloo's Mike Morrison saved 19 of the 21 shots sent his way. More details on the York Lions website.
The following evening the Lions took to the ice again and defeated the Lakehead University Thunderwolves on by a score of 3-1 at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Lions came out hungry in the first period and were firing from all angles on Lakehead goaltender Jeff Bosch, who faced 37 shots on the night. The Lions finally beat Bosch late in the first period when Greg Milner and Trevor Petersen broke into Lakehead territory and executed a superb tic-tac-toe play that Milner finished to put the Lions up 1-0.
Reid Jackman put the game on ice in the final minute as he beat Bosch to put the Lions up 3-1. More details.
Locke’s first career hat trick leads Lions past Rams
Third-year forward Amy Locke netted the first hat trick of her career on Friday night to lead the York University Lions women's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over the Ryerson University Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.
Locke opened the game's scoring on a power play less than four minutes into the first period and added another two goals in the third as part of her tremendous offensive performance. The win is the Lions' seventh overall and third in regulation this season, and the squad is currently 3-4-7-2 and seated in ninth place in the OUA standings. More details.
Lions hit podium at uOttawa’s Winternational Meet
The York University Lions track and field team had a solid weekend at the 2016 uOttawa Winternational Meet, as they picked up three first-place finishes and hit the podium 12 times.
Thrower Brittany Crew had the biggest weekend for the Lions as she won both of her events, placing first in the shot put (16.76m) and the weight throw (17.36m). She dominated the competition in the shot put out throwing the second place finisher by over six metres. The weight throw was closer as she topped her closest competitor by 8 centimetres. Galzote and Town pick up silvers at Western Open
Sebastien Galzote (61kg) and Alexandria Town (55kg) led the way for the York University wrestling team on Saturday at the Western Open in London, Ont., as they both picked up silver medals in their respective weight classes.
Gurnek Tak and Tyler Tate-Austin also had strong weekends for the Lions as both finished the tournament in fourth place in the men's 57kg and 120kg categories respectively.
Overall the Lions finished the tournament ranked ninth in the team standings out of 26 total teams. More details.
Lions look strong in sweeping Paladins
The York University Lions men's volleyball squad swept the Royal Military College Paladins in straight sets on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, Ont.
The Lions play on the defensive front was stellar on Saturday, as they totaled 15 blocks compared to the Paladins' three. The block party was led by Arthur Szwarc and Alexander Duncan-Thibault as they both finished with a game high five blocks. More details.
A day prior, the Lions fell 3-0 to the No. 8 nationally ranked University of Queen's Gaels at the Athletics and Recreation Centre in Kingston, Ont., on Friday evening.
The Gaels were able to scrape by with three close set wins: 25-20 in the first set, 26-24 in the second and another 25-20 victory in the third set.
Despite the loss, Szwarc tallied the most points (17) and kills (14) out of the two teams. Spencer Kingzett, Duncan-Thibault and Tyler Covach each scored five points, while Nicolas Pirnat was given four points to his name. More details.
Lions take down Paladins in four sets
The York University Lions women's volleyball team came from behind on Saturday to defeat the Royal Military College Paladins 3-1 in Kingston, Ont.
The Lions attack was led by Cadence Currie who continues to dismantle the competition. Currie finished Saturday's match with a team high 16 points to go along with 18 digs and 10 kills.
Saturday's match saw the 1-12 Paladins take the first set 25-22 over the Lions. The Paladins' surge was orchestrated by a dominate performance from Kara Stephan, who totaled a game high in points with 20, kills 15, and digs 28. More details.
On Friday night the York University women's volleyball team took a 3-1 loss against the University Queen's Gaels at the Kingston Athletics and Recreation Centre.
The Gaels played a strong first set and were able to grab a 25-15 victory to start the game. Solid individual performances came from Caroline Livingston, who completed four kills, and Shannon Hopkins, who nailed in seven, including a kill to end the set.
Celeste Witzell totaled the highest number of points for the Lions with 11. She finished the game with six kills and four blocks. Carley Flemmer also gave an outstanding performance with 32 digs, while Kirsten Dillon had 22 assists. More details.
Gaels scrape by with 62-59 win over Lions
On Saturday the York University men's basketball team finished with a nail-biting 62-59 loss against the University of Queen's Gaels at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
In the fourth quarter the teams were neck and neck to squeeze out the points needed to get the victory. Nana Adu-Poku gave the Lions a one-point lead at 8:15 and Nathan Culbreath added two points in the last minute of play to make it 60-59, but two properly executed free throws by Gaels Mark Paclibar sealed the win for Queen's. No. 9 Gaels pick up 87-75 win against Lions
The Tait McKenzie Centre was electric on Saturday afternoon despite a 87-75 loss taken by the York University women's basketball team against the No. 9 nationally ranked University of Queen's Gaels for their annual "Shoot For The Cure" game.
The Lions were energetic from the tip off and dominated the first quarter with a 24-14 score. Ishanaa Seupersadsingh and Shauney Fischer each had several moments of brilliance offensively, while the whole team played as a solid unit defensively.
In the fourth quarter the Gaels pulled it together and were able to finish the game 12 points ahead of the Lions. For the Lions, Jackie Koudys finished with the most points on the team with 14, hitting five field goals, two three-pointers, and two free throws. More details.
