Global Labour Speakers Series continues with panel discusson on migrant workers’ struggles

Global Labour ChoudryThe Global Labour Speakers Series continues with a talk on “Local and Global Perspectives on Contemporary Migrant Workers’ Struggles” on March 24 from 1 to 2:30pm at 626 Kaneff Tower.

The talk features a panel discussion of local and global migrant labour organizing in the twenty-first century, with Aziz Choudry, McGill University; Mondli Hlatshwayo, University of Johannesburg; and Evelyn Encalada Grez, York University & Justicia for Migrant Workers.

Highlighting the changing nature of frontline struggles against exploitation, speakers will discuss the ways in which migrant workers are finding new and innovative ways of resisting neoliberal immigration measures and fighting against the precarious nature of jobs from both within and outside of traditional forms of labour organizations.

More about the guests:

Choudry is a professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University, Montreal where he currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Social Movement Learning and Knowledge Production. He is also a visiting professor at the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation at the University of Johannesburg.

Hlatshwayo is a senior lecturer in the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation at the University of Johannesburg. His areas of research include post-schooling, adult and youth education, workers’ education, xenophobia, trade unions and social movements.

Encalada Grez is an adjunct university professor, community organizer and researcher. She is completing a doctoral degree at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Department of Sociology and Equity Studies at the University of Toronto.

The Global Labour Speakers Series at York University is a collaboration of the Global Labour Research Centre, the Work & Labour Studies Program, the Canada Research Chair in Comparative Political Economy, and the Canada Research Chair in the Political Economy of Gender & Work.
