Do you have gently used children’s books that your family has outgrown? Would you like to give those books a second life by donating them to children who cannot afford books of their own?
The BookChest Project, funded by the Faculty of Health’s Agents of Change Program, is a new student initiative with a mission is to provide children’s books and literacy support to children living in high needs Toronto communities. Many of Toronto’s children in low income neighbourhoods have difficulty reading at an age appropriate level and consistently score lower on provincial literacy tests.
This endeavour will only be possible through the generous book donations from the community. The book drive will run through the month of July; the last day to donate books is Friday, July 29.
What kind of books should you donate?
- Children’s books for kids age 7 to 12 years old; no teen or adult books.
- Children’s books in new or gently used condition – no missing covers, torn pages, or pages with colouring/writing on them. A great rule of thumb: if you would gift it to someone, then it’s good enough for our use.
There will be collection boxes located at:
- Room 314 Stong College
- Room 291/292 Behavioural Science Building (Psychology Undergraduate office)
- Room 301A Health, Nursing and Environmental Studies Building (Nursing Undergraduate office)
We hope that you will be able to join us in this important endeavor in promoting children literacy in Toronto.
