Weekend wrap: Men's volleyball Lions win third straight with sweep of Excalibur

The Excalibur is one of two new teams to Ontario University Athletics (OUA) after joining during the off-season. The team is still looking for its first win as a program at 0-6. The Lions improved to 3-2 with the victory.

The result of the match was never in doubt as the Lions won all three sets convincingly. They took the first 25-19, the second 25-15 and the third at 25-15.  More details on the York Lions website.

Women’s volleyball Lions get back into win column with victory over Excalibur

The York University Lions women’s volleyball team earned a four-set victory over the OUA’s newest team, the Trent University Excalibur, during their first trip to Peterborough on Saturday evening.

The Excalibur gave the Lions a tough fight, particularly in the first set by taking it 25-22. The Lions bounced back in convincing fashion, winning the next three sets 25-21, 25-14 and 25-18 to earn their third victory of the year.

The Lions are now 3-3 in the OUA East standings, while the Excalibur fell to 2-4.  More details.

Wrestling Lions finish second at York Open

The York University Lions wrestling team finished in second place in the overall standings at the York Open meet on Sunday at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The squad was led by rookie Shady El-Nahas, who won all of his matches to capture the individual gold medal in the men's 100-kg. weight class. He defeated Montreal’s Hamed Rowshani in the final and was named the tournament male MVP for his efforts.

El-Nahas, also a national-level judoka, is undefeated on the season at 12-0 and has won gold medals at meets hosted by Concordia University and McMaster University.  More details.

Sheppard’s three-point night leads men’s hockey Lions over Gee-Gees

York Lions men’s hockey player Derek Sheppard factored into every goal on Saturday night. This included scoring the game-winner in double overtime, to lead the York University Lions men’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees during game action in the nation’s capital.

Sheppard found the back of the net just 22 seconds into the second extra frame to give the Lions their eighth win of the season and they remain in second place in the OUA West Division.

In the first period, neither team was able to hit pay dirt. The game moved into its second frame with a 0-0 tie. More details.

The Lions also picked up a point in their first game of the weekend with a 3-2 overtime loss on Friday to the No. 8 nationally ranked McGill University Redmen in Montreal, QC.

The first period was mostly uneventful, with just 12 total shots on goal between the two teams. Just when it looked as though the squads would head into the first intermission scoreless, the Lions got on the board with a goal by defenceman Shayne Rover, his third of the season, at 19:29 for a 1-0 York lead.  More details.

Women’s hockey Lions defeated by Warriors in double overtime

The York University Lions women’s hockey team was defeated by a score of 2-1 in double overtime by the University of Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Field on Saturday afternoon.

In the first period of play, the Warriors capitalized on a power play at 3:24 when Rachel Marriott scored the first goal of the game. The Lions were unable to beat Waterloo goaltender Stephanie Sluys in the first period and it would end with a 1-0 Warriors lead.

All 20 minutes of the second period went scoreless. York goaltender Lauren Dubie recorded 19 saves in the game, including six in the middle frame.  More details.

Also this weekend, the Lions suffered a 5-1 loss to the Western University Mustangs in London, Ont. A scoreless first period gave way to a busy second where the two teams combined for four goals. The Mustangs got on the board first at 7:14 on a goal by Amanda Pereira, and made it 2-0 less than one minute later when Lyndsay Kirkham scored her first of three on the day at 8:01.

Late in the period the Lions finally got on the board themselves when team captain Amy Locke scored a shorthanded goal thanks to an assist from her sister, Erin Locke, to make the score 2-1.  More details.

Men’s basketball Lions hang on in win over Warriors

The York University Lions men’s basketball team hung on down the stretch for an exciting 83-78 victory over the visiting University of Waterloo Warriors at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday night to win their second straight game to start the season.

Jayden Frederick led the way with an impressive double-double, putting up 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead all Lions in both categories.  More details.

The Lions were not as fortunate the following night, as the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks used a big fourth quarter to come back and defeat the Lions 74-67. The Lions took their first lead of the game right at the end of the first quarter and carried it through to late in the fourth, but the Golden Hawks outscored the Lions 28-15 in the final frame to steal the victory.  More details.

Women’s basketball Lions taken down by Warriors

The York University Lions women’s basketball team returned to the court on Friday night when the University of Waterloo Warriors traveled to the Tait McKenzie Centre to hand the Lions their second straight loss by a score of 67-55.

The opening quarter of play was very tame for both teams as it took until the final minute of play for either team to break double digits. The defensively dominant period ended with a score of 11-9 in favour of the Lions.  More details.

The Lions were also defeated by the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks the following night by a score of 87-57.

As the ball was tipped off the Lions would look to set the tone in the opening quarter. Fifth-year centre Shauney Fischer played stellar in the opening period of play as she dropped five points from the field. Solid defensive play by the Golden Hawks limited York to 12 points and the quarter ended with a score of 26-12.  More details.
