The York University community will honour the life of former York chancellor Arden Haynes, who died peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 23, with the lowering of the flags.
The flags on the Keele campus, Glendon flagpoles, and those at the Passy residences will be flying at half-mast from sunrise on Thursday, March 30 until 1pm on Friday, March 31.
Haynes served as York University chancellor from February 1994 to April 1998. He was also honoured with doctorate degrees from York University, as well as the University of Manitoba and Acadia University.
He died peacefully at his home on Stony Lake in his 90th year.
Haynes had a passion for life, family and career. He was an accomplished painter, golfer and an exceptional fly fisherman. He loved opera and jazz, and served on the board of the Canadian Opera Company.
In 1951, Haynes joined Imperial Oil and remained with the company until his retirement in 1992. His career took him all over North America, and ended in Toronto as the chairman and CEO of the company.
Haynes believed in corporate ethics, governance and social responsibility. He served on the boards of the Royal Bank, Rio Algom, Power Corp and McCain's. In 1988, he was made an officer of the Order of Canada. His dedication to social responsibility led him to many philanthropic endeavours, including the Alzheimer's Society, Junior Achievement, Diabetes Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Olympic Trust.
A funeral service will be held in St. John's Anglican Church on 19 Don Ridge Dr. in Toronto on Thursday, March 30 at 2pm. A reception will follow at the same location.
