York University Department of History Professor Craig Heron has been honoured with the 2017 Lee Lorch Award (formerly the Distinguished Scholar Award) presented by the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT).
CAUT presented the award at a banquet in Ottawa on Friday, May 5, and recognizes academics who excel in each of the domains of academic life: teaching, research, service to the institution and to the community. The recipients are individuals whose teaching, research and service have contributed noticeably to the lives of their students, to their institution, to their field of study, and to the community.
Recipients of the award receive a $1,000 honorarium, and are invited to deliver an address during the banquet.
During the ceremony, Heron delivered an address on "The Public Intellectual," which is available to read at www.caut.ca/docs/default-source/professional-advice/craig-heron---the-public-intellectual.pdf?sfvrsn=4.
Lee Lorch was professor emeritus of mathematics at York University. Lorch died on Feb. 28, 2014 at the age of 98. He is best remembered for his mathematical contributions in classical analysis in the general and special functions, and for his unique work in support of civil rights.
CAUT honoured Lorch with the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2012.
