CERLAC Fellow and York Professor Emerita Liisa North was honoured by the Rural Studies Workshop of the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (UASB) of Ecuador and the Grupo TIERRA at a special ceremony on May 25.
The honour was conferred for her scholarship and teaching on rural issues in Ecuador and other Latin American countries and her support for rural and popular organizations. The plaque presented refers to her “important contributions as a rural researcher, Latin American intellectual, and social activist.”
The ceremony was attended by university dignitaries and professors, members of various civic organizations that support rural communities in Ecuador, and representatives of the numerous institutions that make up the Grupo TIERRA.
Many of the students that North taught and supervised over the years in the graduate programs of the UASB and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), that is, since her retirement in 2005 from the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, were present at the event.
