York University community members have come together to raise close to $80,000 in support of local agencies and programs through the 2017 York Cares United Way Campaign, which runs until Nov. 30.
Each year, the York U community comes together in support of the United Way, and this year’s goal is $185,000. Funds raised through the campaign benefit important local agencies and programs – some of which impact York’s programs and students directly.
Did you know that $500 provides funding and support for a week-long hot breakfast program for over 50 kids, and that $100 provides crisis and supportive counselling to a woman and her children who are survivors of domestic violence? Opportunities to make donations will continue through the month, with an upcoming Skills & Talents Silent Auction Nov. 16 and 17. Staff and faculty can make personal donations through a unique giving link that will be sent via email on the morning of Nov. 14.
The York Cares United Way Campaign Skills & Talents Silent Auction will run for two days, Nov. 16 and 17, from noon to 2pm in the Big Egg, West Office Building. This event is a skills swap where staff and faculty are able to showcase their unique talents in areas outside of work.
Some of the auction items this year include: a one-year planetary membership to the Ontario Science Centre; a 10-piece Lagostina Ticino cookware set; a gift card to Harry Rosen; a private behind-the-scenes tour of the Allan I. Carswell Observatory for six people; guitar lessons; a spin class with your choice of music; a police ride-along; hand-blown glass ornaments; baked goods; prepared lunches for a week; knitted items; a photo shoot; teacup candles; original art; and much more.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
To date, the campaign has hosted:
• A Pancake Breakfast, which was attended by 108 people and raised $315. The Pancake Breakfast raffle winner was Colleen Robinson, administrative assistant in the Dept. of Anthropology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.
• A CN Tower climb, which had 11 student participants who raised $665.
• A Halloween Costume Event and Jeans Week Event hosted by the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost, raising approximately $220.
