Order of Canada appoints individuals with York U connections

Seven individuals with an affiliation to York University have been appointed to the Order of Canada, as announced on Dec. 29, 2017 by Governor General of Canada Julie Payette.

The individuals from the York University community are among 125 new appointments to the Order of Canada that includes four companions (C.C.), 35 officers (O.C.) and 86 members (C.M.).

Alberto Manguel

Honoured with the appointment of officer of the Order of Canada is honorary degree recipient and former faculty member Alberto Manguel (LLD [Hons.] '15).

Manguel is an internationally acclaimed anthologist, translator, essayist, novelist and editor. He has authored several award-winning nonfiction books, including A History of Reading, The Dictionary of Imaginary Places, Curiosity and novels such as News from a Foreign Country Came and All Men are Liars.

He moved from Argentina to Toronto in the 1980s and taught literary courses at York University before concentrating on his own writing. He has been named commander of the order of arts and letters in France, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (U.K.), the Guggenheim Foundation (U.S.) and the Argentinian Academy of Letters.

York University celebrated Manguel’s literary accomplishments with an honorary doctor of laws degree that was conferred during spring convocation ceremonies June 17, 2015 for the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.

Other individuals affiliated with York University were appointed as members of the Order of Canada and include: alumni Mark Breslin (BA '73), Lynn Factor (MSW '88), Dale H. Lastman (JD '82) and Barbara Neis (BA '75); former faculty member Janine Brodie; and honorary degree recipient Saul Feldberg (LLD [Hons] '04).
