Multi-genre writer and York University alumna Canisia Lubrin will be the featured guest at the upcoming Creative Writing Reading Series event on Feb. 28, from 1:30 to 3pm at 305 Founders College.
Lubrin studied creative writing and professional writing at York (BA ’11), and during her time as a student at York, she won the President’s Prize for Poetry (ii) Sylvia Ellen Hearch Memorial Award.
Her first poetry collection is Voodoo Hypothesis (2017) and she is also the author of augur (2017). She is consulting editor at Wolsak & Wynn, and she serves on the editorial board
of Humber Literary Review and as an adviser to Open Book.
Her work has been featured in magazines, journals, anthologies and on stage. She has appeared on TVO, podcasts, and on CBC’s the Doc Project through “HERstory in Black: 150 exemplary Black women in Canada.”
She also holds a University of Guelph MFA in creative writing, and is the 2017-18 poet in residence at Poetry in Voice.
“York’s Creative Writing program gifted me the real struggle of tunnelling into the writer I often dreamed, but seldom believed, to be me,” she said.
The event is presented by the Creative Writing program in collaboration with the Department of English in York University’s Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.
