Six students from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School have been selected for prestigious Hennick Centre business law internships that will pay them each $10,000 through to summer’s end.
The paid work placements – five of which are being funded by McCarthy Tétrault LLP – were arranged by the Jay and Barbara Hennick Centre for Business and Law, a joint initiative of Osgoode and the Schulich School of Business at York. The placements will provide full-time workplace exposure to the client side of legal practice from May through August for the five Osgoode juris doctor (JD) students and one JD/MBA student as follows:
- Madison Black, JD ’20, Mount Sinai Hospital;
- Arjin Choi, JD ’19, Ontario Securities Commission (OSC);
- Aleeza Freedman, JD ’19, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH);
- Rishi Nageshar, JD ’19, Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Ontario (IIROC);
- Ronen Nehmad, JD/MBA ’20, World Bank Group (Washington, DC); and
- Jorgen Wong, JD ’20, FirstService Residential Ontario.
The business law internships are part of the larger Osgoode Summer Internship Program that will see a total of 29 paid internship opportunities made available to Osgoode JD students in a broad range of categories from public interest law, health law and Aboriginal law to business law, feminist issues, environmental issues and more.
“We are deeply grateful to McCarthy Tétrault for its generous support for five of the business law internships and these six organizations for creating an excellent opportunity for our students to enhance their education in business and law by working alongside their professional teams,” said Professor Edward J. Waitzer, director of the Hennick Centre for Business and Law. “Our students will work under the active supervision of their legal staff and will assist with business law- or commercial law-related assignments and tasks. These internships will provide the students with amazing mentorship opportunities.”
Launched in February 2009 with a major gift from Jay and Barbara Hennick, the Hennick Centre for Business and Law is the first Canadian centre to promote and develop joint business and law scholarship and education.
The Hennick Centre business law internship program is open to Osgoode students who have strong academic credentials, have completed the first year of the JD program, and have a demonstrated interest in business and law.
The business law internship selection committee – made up of the assistant director of the Hennick Centre, Osgoode’s manager of experiential education and career development and a member of the faculty – identifies the best match between the students and placements based on the stated requirements of the organizations.
