York University hosts conference for Canadian college and university print managers

York University’s in-house Printing Services hosted the national College and University Print Managers Association of Canada (CUPMAC) 51st annual conference, held in Toronto, June 10 to 12.

Delegates representing institutions from B.C. to Halifax share the mission of York’s Printing Services: to provide convenient, local, cost effective printing and distribution services.

The keen interest of the group is in sharing information on technology, in terms of machines (digital print machines, wide format print, print on specialized substances like signage boards and fabrics, specialized die cutting, embossing, foil stamping, and bindery) and information systems, to allow remote submission of jobs to the print shop.

There were technical presentations by a dozen companies, and keynote speakers were: Marc Salzman, a self-proclaimed technology evangelist known from his presence on radio, TV and Cineplex; and Mike O’Connor, who teaches a fourth-year course in creative writing at York, and is well-known as the publisher of the indie Insomniac Press. O’Connor delivered a talk on “How books can save democracy and all of us.”

As the CUPMAC conference was downtown, guests took a subway ride directly to the York University subway stop for an hour-long tour of the University’s production facility hosted by Frank Myers, manager of Print and Mail Services. The CUPMAC group was particularly impressed with York’s capabilities and how the facility suits the unique needs of York University.
