During a special event on Oct. 12, York University’s VISTA (Vision: Science to Applications) program celebrated its 2018 graduate scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships. In a reception following a keynote lecture, nine master’s scholarships, 12 doctoral scholarships and three postdoctoral fellowships were awarded by the funding program to researchers in the field of vision research.
“It’s both heartening and gratifying to see these young scientists getting off to a good start with their VISTA scholarships and fellowships,” said VISTA’s Scientific Director, Faculty of Health Professor Doug Crawford. “These are the vision research stars of tomorrow.”
The applicant’s projects span the subjects of biology, psychology, computer science, digital media and kinesiology. From diver-robot interaction at depth to kinaesthetic creativity in augmented reality to monocular depth edge perception in natural scenes, every project reflects the excellence and unique interdisciplinary expertise of vision research across York University.

The reception followed a lecture titled “Deep Networks” given by Professor Alan Yuille, the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University. During his seminar, Yuille remarked, “York shows how Faculties can be brought together for interdisciplinary research. The vision research here is a model of how it should be done.”
Financially supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, VISTA was created in 2016 to build on York University’s global leadership in biological and computational vision. The program aims to produce technologies and drive innovation across five research centres and the Faculties of Health, Science, Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, the Lassonde School of Engineering and the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design.
